Beyond Recovery
The New Future of Fukushima
Information
The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011 devastated the Tohoku Region. Fukushima Prefecture suffered greatly as the site of the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident which caused the spread of radioactive materials, initially forcing the evacuation of up to 160,000 residents. Infrastructure reconstruction including railways and roads was delayed due to the spread of radioactive materials immediately after the incident, and efforts were focused on decontamination. Due to misinformation and fear, local industries such as agriculture and fishing were significantly affected.
13 years have now passed. Residents have begun to return to the area, and Fukushima Prefecture’s recovery has advanced significantly, with new initiatives now taking shape. One is the "Fukushima Innovation Coast Framework," started in 2014 to ensure the future of Fukushima. New projects in fields such as robotics, drones, energy, environment, agriculture, and healthcare are underway, developing the region's growing industries.
The program showcases the efforts of people working diligently in the reconstruction and to build a new future.
