Information

This fall, a Hyakkaten (Japanese department store) with a 300-year history revamps its Osaka branch in startling fashion. To kick things off, they remodel a building that has been a landmark in the city for nearly a century, giving a new face to the Daimaru brand of department stores.
Staffers rush to prepare for the historical re-opening. The interior designer decides on a motif that recreates Japan’s four seasons. Living plants are delivered to the floor and arranged with mannequins in original ikebana installations. The Inbound Guests Concierge gives the Tax Refund counter a full makeover, with a focus on dramatically reducing the waiting time, to make visitors from overseas feel more welcome.
Why visit a Hyakkaten in this age, when you can purchase anything with the click of a button? The people featured in this documentary, who create the physical spaces that endear customers to the Hyakkaten, are determined to answer this question. Find out how one traditional Hyakkaten endeavors to create new value in a new age.
