Information

Shochu and Awamori are the main liquors of Japan. They have been made throughout Japan since ancient times, tying them closely to the history, culture, climate and geography of the regions they are made in. Wherever there is Shochu, people will gather, local cooking will be served, and there will be entertainment and laughter.

In this program, our reporter Justin Patterson visits the historical production regions of Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima and Okinawa to learn about the differences in the ingredients and methods used to make Shochu and Awamori.

The program will also focus on the traditional culture and games associated with Shochu, local specialties served with it, and local scenic spots. A look at Shochu and Awamori will offer insights into the lifestyle of the people in the region where it is made.
