Takanawa Gateway Station
Creating a New International City
Information
A new train station, Takanawa Gateway, has opened in the capital city of Tokyo. The first new station to be added to the Yamanote loop line in about 50 years, Takanawa Gateway is now Tokyo’s new destination. The station building was designed by world-renowned architect, Kuma Kengo, symbolized by its enormous white roof based on a motif of the traditional Japanese art of origami. And at a height of 30 meters, with three stories above ground, the scale of the station building gives it the feeling of a major city hub.
Including its newest member station, the Yamanote Line is an above-ground central loop line linking culturally and historically distinct areas of Tokyo, joining city to city and people to people. Through the Tokyo Moving Round project, we present an in-depth look at this internationally unique rail line.
We’ll also feature the attractions of the new Takanawa Gateway Station and the ongoing redevelopment in the surrounding Shinagawa area, which is set to create a new international city.
