Making Nikko an Eco-Resort Destination

Trailblazers

Information

Before the Second World War, diplomats stationed in Tokyo spent their summers in Nikko, calling it “the paradise of Japan.” Now, one century later, initiatives are underway to make Nikko a resort destination that befits a new age and builds on the keyword “sustainability.”
Decarbonization is being promoted in areas such as power generation, heating, and public transportation, and a high-end resort is serving up dishes centered on local produce. Efforts are also underway to highlight Nikko’s history as an international summer resort area.
We follow the people who are working to establish a new paradise.
