Kumiko Artist Suzuki Mai

Trailblazers

Information

Artist Suzuki Mai works to promote kumiko, a traditional Japanese craft in which small wooden pieces are joined together without nails to create highly decorative fixtures.
Her activities are as multifaceted as her kumiko designs. They include the founding of a brand to communicate the craft’s value as a piece of Edo-Tokyo culture, as well as the creation of avant-garde kumiko works using 3D printers, laser cutters, and other digital tools. She’s also collaborating with a contemporary dancer to put a wearable kumiko piece on the London stage.
We follow her as she strives to preserve the spirit of the craft while giving it new shape.
