The People Forging Paths in Okukuji

Trailblazers

Information

In 2025, Ibaraki Prefecture’s Okukuji area hosted a new survival race that drew over 170 participants. The cycling race on the first day and the trail running race on the second day covered some of the most challenging courses in Japan.
The event was supported by the locals, who prepared regional specialties for the participants and cheered them on. Their hope is to turn the event into one of Japan’s top road races and draw more visitors to the scenic yet underpopulated area.
We follow the participants who tackled the grueling race and the people who played an active part in its success.
